"It made me confident again."

After leaving university, Moriell, like many graduates, found it difficult to get into employment. Two months of constantly applying for jobs and facing rejection left him feeling burnt out. At that point, Moriell decided to take a step back and go travelling, returning with what he describes as “an open mindset.”

Soon after coming back, Moriell came across BREAKOUT at a careers fair. A conversation with the team sparked his interest, and he went on to join the BREAKOUT support programme before attending the BREAKOUT x Bupa Discovery Day.

The day gave Moriell the chance to meet three mentors, gain different perspectives on careers, hear directly from Bupa employees about their day-to-day roles, and explore his own strengths and ambitions. He also gained insight into Bupa’s recruitment process and what employers are looking for.

For Moriell, the experience came at exactly the right time. He described BREAKOUT X Bupa Discovery Day as a great success and “really well thought out”, but more importantly, it helped rebuild his confidence after months of rejection. The experience “reignited the light” in him to keep going and helped put into perspective what was possible.

It also changed how Moriell viewed the recruitment process. He believes employers can receive hundreds of CVs, but an application can only tell you so much about a person. As Moriell explains, when you have that human interaction, “it’s completely different.”

You can get a behind the scenes look at the engagement day below:

That is why Moriell believes employers should support BREAKOUT. It creates an opportunity for young people to show who they are beyond their CV, while giving employers the chance to discover potential they may otherwise miss.

Now 22, Moriell’s message to employers is simple:

“Even though I don’t have all the skills, if you give me a chance, I can learn the skills they need.”

BREAKOUT gave Moriell more than career advice. It gave him his confidence back, opened his eyes to new possibilities and, most importantly, gave him a reason to keep going.
